Dime Bank Foundation Supports New London Rotary Foundation's Camp Rotary
News Release - September 5, 2008
(Norwich, CT) -Dime Bank Foundation recently awarded $1,000 to
New London Rotary Foundation's Camp Rotary. Dime was one of several sponsors
to support Camp Rotary, a 14-year program that provides 5-week camperships
to 45 middle school students living in or going to school in New London.
To be considered for a campership, students must submit an application
and essay to the selection committee.
"We're very grateful for Dime Foundation's gift to our program,"
said Marge Taggart-Dedrick, chairperson of Camp Rotary for the New London
Rotary Club. "I run three camp programs, and Camp Rotary is a jewel
to the children of Southeastern Connecticut. In their essays, many students
express that if they didn't have Camp Rotary they would be in trouble.
"
Taggart-Dedrick also noted that for two consecutive years, there has
been a surplus of applications, causing some students to be turned away.
When the Board of Directors of the New London Rotary Club meets again
in August, it will explore options for expanding next year's Camp Rotary.
"Dime Bank Foundation is proud to support New London Rotary Foundation's
Camp Rotary," said Dime Bank Foundation president, Jim Cronin. "It
reaches out to children who otherwise would not have an opportunity to
enjoy the benefits of a camp experience."
Camp Rotary is a balanced summer program, including bus transportation,
educational tutorials and recreation. The educational component of the
program takes place in the morning at the Shiloh Baptist Church's Family
Life Center.
Students are mentored in math, science and English. In the afternoon,
they participate in athletic activities such as, swimming and soccer,
at Connecticut College.
This summer's Camp Rotary began July 7 and ended August 8. On August
7, the New London Rotary Club hosted a luncheon honoring sponsors, contributors
and the students. For more information, or if you would like to assist
