(Norwich, CT) — The March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter and Dime Bank have partnered to raise awareness of baby and pregnancy health as well as funds through a new local initiative called “Banking for Babies.”

Residents of Southeastern Connecticut can donate their spare change to improve the health of babies.  Local schools, community groups, and businesses are urged to join in the program by collecting spare change and bringing their donation to any Dime Bank location in Connecticut.  Dime Bank, a proud sponsor of March of Dimes March for Babies in Mystic, will also be accepting donations on Sunday, April 27 at the event.

Jim Cronin, president of Dime, said, “Dime is pleased and proud to be partnering with March of Dimes to help raise funds for the health and well being of babies.  No parent should have to experience the devastation of a baby born too soon or too sick.  It is our hope that people will respond by giving generously in support of the March of Dimes mission to give every baby a healthy start.”

“Banking for Babies” reflects the origins of the March of Dimes, founded 70 years ago by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  In 1938, President Roosevelt established the March of Dimes, a unique partnership of scientists and volunteers, whose goal was to conquer polio.

Americans were urged to donate dimes to the organization to fund polio research.  In 1955, a vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk was declared “safe, potent and effective.”

Today the March of Dimes mission to give every baby a healthy start continues on, and on Sunday, April 27th, volunteers and supporters will gather at the Mystic Arts Center for March for Babies (formerly known as WalkAmerica).  Registration begins at 9 a.m. and March for Babies starts at 10 a.m.  Participants can register online at www.marchforbabies.org or call 1-800-525-9255.

March for Babies in Mystic is proudly presented by Mohegan Sun and sponsored by Dime Bank, the Connecticut Sun, Dominion Millstone, Mystic Arts Center and Soft Rock 106.5 WBMW.
